The Lachrimae Antiqua (also spelled Antiquae) was the first of seven Lachrimae that Dowland wrote between 1596 and 1604. All of his Lachrimae were very popular but the Lachrimae Antiqua was the most famous. It is hauntingly beautiful. Lachrimae means “Seven Old Tears”. The seven pieces were originally written for lute and were arranged for various ensembles. In Mr. Charlton’s arrangement he trades the original Dowland melody between the contrabass and organ while adding his own counter melody on the repeats in the soprano line.
